What is a Rainy River floor?

Rainy River

When Brett Olson and Paul Ostlund developed the Rainy River concept in 2015, it was part outdoor enthusiast, part preservation of natural resources, and part creating something truly unique in a very mature hardwood flooring industry. The Rainy River region of Northern Minnesota is an outdoorsman’s paradise, known for its untouched natural beauty and world-class walleye fishing.

The natural visual beauty of the Rainy River region inspired us to develop a product that industry standardized manufacturing grades did not fulfill. By leaving all of the natural characteristics of the timber in the flooring planks craftsman installers can use or trim as they desire, depending on the flooring look they want to create. We sensed the market was looking for a solution that allowed designers, decorators, and installers to use their unique design and creative touch to create unique, custom floors without the custom price.

If you’re looking for a canvas for your creativity, this is the flooring for you. We hand select character grade, long length lumber, machine the face, back and tongue & groove to our precision standards then re-inspect and package it for shipment. We do not trim out character, cut it into defined grades, or square the ends. We ship these unique boards to the installers who use their skill and experience to trim and select the placement of each plank to create a stunning custom floor. The installation will require a little more trimming on the job site to create the look you want, but that small amount of extra effort is well worth it when you see the end results.
